Navigating loss and value trade-offs in a changing climate

چکیده
Climate change puts at risk what people value in their everyday lives, with evidence of harm and suffering already taking place across all regions the world. As societies slowly come to grips possibility not being able save everything that is valued, there an urgent need identify most important for individuals groups, prioritise action prevent or minimise intolerable losses. Yet, people’s priorities vary greatly; individual choices are contingent on hold dear places they inhabit, which turn shaped by positioning society experiences loss. In this article, we draw recent epistemological ontological engagements climate adaptation loss from social sciences examine how consider options protect face climatic impacts. Drawing 80+ interviews residents along urban–rural transect Western Australia, first demonstrate complex dynamic nature decision-making ‘worlds’. We do using innovative methodology allows participants visualise trade-offs, present future. then similarities differences between these worlds show where converge diverge. argue attention intersecting, conflicting, potentially uncomfortable processes prioritisation, losses omissions (re)produce, provide crucial entry points negotiate navigate risks within communities ways inclusive, fair, sustainable.

Forest management scenarios in a changing climate: trade-offs between carbon, timber, and old forest.
Balancing economic, ecological, and social values has long been a challenge in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, where conflict over timber harvest and old-growth habitat on public lands has been contentious for the past several decades. The Northwest Forest Plan, adopted two decades ago to guide management on federal lands, is currently being revised as the region searches for a balance be...
متن کاملNavigating Trade-Offs: Working for Conservation and Development Outcomes
In the early 1980s, the protectionist paradigm that had dominated conservation began losing ground. It was replaced by a notion, in the developing world especially, that poverty reduction and environmental protection should be tackled in an integrated manner (Adams 1990). Several approaches emerged, building on early attempts that can be traced back to the 1960s (Garnett et al. 2007). The promo...
متن کاملEcosystem Simulations of the English Channel : Climate and Trade - Offs
Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) whole-ecosystem models were built for the English Channel (ICES areas VIId and VIIe) for the time periods 1973 and 1995. Using Ecosim, the 1973 model was run forwards with a time-series of fishing mortality data to assess how realistically it predicted the changes in biomass that had occurred. The parameters for both models were modified so that the biomass trends refl...
متن کاملNavigating the Public Cloud Labyrinth: A Study of Price, Capacity, and Scaling Granularity Trade-offs
Public clouds offer numerous virtual machine (VM) types with complex trade-offs that tenants must navigate for cost-effective resource procurement. We identify three key qualitative axes using which these trade-offs can be succinctly expressed: price dynamism, offered capacity dynamism, and granularity of resource scaling. We offer several examples of contemporary VM offerings and where they fi...
متن کاملNighttime temperature and human sleep loss in a changing climate
Human sleep is highly regulated by temperature. Might climate change-through increases in nighttime heat-disrupt sleep in the future? We conduct the inaugural investigation of the relationship between climatic anomalies, reports of insufficient sleep, and projected climate change. Using data from 765,000 U.S. survey respondents from 2002 to 2011, coupled with nighttime temperature data, we show...
